What Is a DOL Card and Why Is It Important?
You may have heard of a "DOL card," also commonly referred to as an OSHA card or Completion card. But what exactly is a DOL card, and why does it matter? In this article, we'll explain what DOL cards are, whether you need one, and how they can benefit you as a worker.
A DOL (Department of Labor) card is a wallet-sized certificate that is issued upon successfully completing an OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Outreach Training Program. While this training was once voluntary, it has become mandatory in many states for professionals in construction and general industry. Additionally, many employers now require OSHA Outreach training for their workers in these sectors to ensure a safer working environment.
Although DOL cards don’t certify employees for specific job roles, they do serve as proof that the individual has completed a course on workplace hazards and safety practices aimed at preventing injuries and fatalities. It is often up to employers to decide if a DOL card is necessary for a job site.
In high-risk environments such as construction, entry-level employees are typically required to take the OSHA 10 Construction course. Similarly, workplaces with significant hazards, like manufacturing facilities, may require the OSHA 10 General Industry course.
If OSHA training is required for your job, you’ll likely be asked to carry your DOL card on-site. In 2019, the U.S. Department of Labor enhanced the DOL card, making it more durable and secure.
You can obtain a DOL card by completing an OSHA 10 or 30-hour course. The choice between the two depends on your job role, employer requirements, and career goals. The general breakdown is as follows:
OSHA 10-hour course: For entry-level employees
OSHA 30-hour course: For managers or those with safety responsibilities
